HijackThis Description
HijackThis is free software that generates a report of file and registry settings. This report can then be used to manually identify and remove spyware from your computer.
The software does not tell you which registry entry or file setting is good or bad, so don’t change entries or settings unless you are certain of what you are doing.
To use HijackThis, you start the program, and then click “scan”. A list of all registry and file setting will be generated.
This software is for advanced users; unless you are sure that an entry is spyware do not change it. Expert users can clean their computer using this software.
To have HijackThis make a log file:
- Click start to program files
- Then select “HijackThis”
- Then click “Do a system scan only.”
- Next, click the scan button in the left lower corner
After the scan is done, the button will read “save log”. The log contains registry entries and file settings.
HijackThis will also generate a startup file list. To do this, click Start, then program files and then HijackThis and then Hijackthis.exe. Open “misc. Tools section”, click generate “start up list log”. Then click “ok”.
HijackThis uses a process manager to terminate any running process you want to stop running.
There is also a “fix checked button”. You can check as many processes as you want. This option will delete the processes from your computer. Be sure that you know what you are doing, before using this.
If you delete something and want it back, you can click “misc. Tools" then “backup”. A list of items you have deleted will be displayed. Select the item you would like back and click “Restore”.
If you get an error message about missing .DLL files, you will need to go to the following website link. http://download.microsoft.com/download/v160pro/Redist/Sp5/win98Me/ENUS/ubran60SP5.exe
HijackThis needs visual basic files that older computers don’t have, in order for it to run.
Some malware will shut down HijackThis as soon as it starts. If this happens, change the program name (then the malware doesn’t recognize it.) The program will run with the new name.
