Gnutella Network
The first client that connected to the Gnutella network was developed by Justin Frankel and Tom Pepper early 2000. The client was made available for download on Nullsoft's servers on March 14. The availabilty of the Gnutella client was prematurely announced on Slashdot (a popular news site) which resulted in thousands of downloads that very day. On March 15, only a day later, AOL pulled the plug due to legal concerns. They also made sure Nullsoft understood that file sharing related activities was no path to follow.
Despite AOL's quick reaction, a mere 24 hours was all that was needed to start a whole new generation of file sharing; now one of the most popular ways to share files Gnutella.
