How to Create a Torrent
So you have been using BitTorrent for a while now but you have never created your own torrent yet? Or perhaps you want to start using a more efficient method to share large files with your friends? Maybe you just want to see if you can get it to work. Whatever your reasons might be, you have come to the right place:
This tutorial guide will explain in three easy steps how to create a torrent using the four most popular BitTorrent applications around: µTorrent, BitTorrent (Mainline), Vuze and BitComet.
Sharing your own files using BitTorrent is not as straightforward as with other file sharing networks. First, you need to create a torrent file, and then you need to send that file to everyone you want to share the file with. There are plenty of torrent search sites around that allow you to upload your torrent, check out our directory if you are looking for one.
µTorrent & BitTorrent
1. Go to File -> Create New Torrent...
2. Select what you want to share using either the "Add file" or "Add directory" button
3. Enter one or more tracker announce URLs, and click "Create and save as..." to create the torrent
The rest of the settings should not be changed: Piece size should say "(auto detect)" and only the "Start seeding" checkbox should be checked. If you want you can enter a short comment as well.
Vuze (Azureus)
1. Go to File -> New Torrent...
2. Choose "Use an external Tracker" and enter a tracker announce URL
3. Choose whether to share a "Single file" or "Directory", depending on your selection clicking Next will bring up either the file or folder selection screen. Click Finish when you are done.
You do not need to change any other settings: none of the checkboxes on the first screen need to checked; enabling "Add Multi-Tracker information to the torrent" will allow you to add more tracker announce URLs when you click Next. If you want to start the torrent right away you should browse to the last wizard screen and check the first checkbox: "Open the torrent for seeding when done". Make sure the last checkbox: "Allow decentralized tracking when tracker is unavailable" is checked and Private torrent is not.
BitComet
1. Go to File -> Make Torrent...
2. Choose either "Single File" or "Directory" and use the Browse button to select what you want to share
3. Enter a tracker announce URL in the large text area labeled as "Tracker Server and DHT Network Node List", and click OK to create the torrent.
None of the other settings need to be changed: "Piece Size" should say Auto, and the "Network Type" should be "Enable Public DHT Network (Recommended)". Under Output you have a Browse button you can use to save the torrent file to a different location. The Publisher tab allows you to add more advanced comments, this is not required.
